Arrests made in Animal Shelter investigation

The Texas Rangers have ended their investigation into allegations at the Marlin Animal Shelter and three people have been arrested.

Marlin Police Chief James Hommel was arrested Thursday on a series of charges related to the city's animal shelter. Hommel faces ten indictments, including cruelty to non-livestock animals, torture, and abandonment.

Nicole Grams, a former animal control officer, and Robert Thomas have also been arrested. They also face 10 counts of animal abuse.

A Facebook post in January of 2024 about the conditions and treatment of dogs at the Marlin Animal Control Center sparked concern from residents leading to an eventual investigation by the Texas Rangers.

The photos showed graphic and disturbing images of the dogs that appeared to be malnourished.
