Citizen’s Empowerment Project meets

There are many instances where, “If only you had known” could have made the difference in a situation, especially when dealing with the legal system.  Coordinated by Sonia Ponce, ten members from the community volunteered to meet Thursday, Feb. 6, at the local public library for the inception of the non-partisan group, Citizen’s Empowerment Project.

With a genuine concern, the “Civics” class is to educate the community about the rights and responsibilities as citizens. Ponce stated, “It may not solve any existing problems but hopefully will create an environment where citizens feel empowered to make decisions based on facts.”

The discussion topic was the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the United Station Constitution, which centers around the protection of individual liberties and limitation of government power. It was noted Amendment IV (…but upon probably cause) is the most often violated amendment. Various topics will be discussed in future workshops.

Sponsored by the group, a community outreach voter registration drive is scheduled Saturday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m., at the Marlin Public Library. The next workshop meeting is March 6 at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Sonia Ponce at (469) 693-0492.
