Native Marlinite scheduled to speak at Davis Chapel United Methodist Church
Rev. Harvey McGruder, is the son of the late Ocie and Beverly McGruder. He is a native son of Marlin. He received his early Education in the Booker T. Washington Schools of Marlin, Texas.
He graduated in 1964,after serving as Class President, Captain of a winning football team, as well as, President of the Student Council. He earned his college degrees from Texas Southern University of Houston, Texas; obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1968 and a Master’s of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1971. He also attended Chicago Theological Seminary on the campus of the University of Chicago.
Upon completion of college, he married, Mrs. Carolyn Hinton McGruder and they had one son Michael Keith McGruder.
Also, after completion of college, he relocated to Chicago, Illinois due to a job offer with Amoco Oil Company in Marketing Research and Development. He retired from the company after 30 years of a very successful career. During his years in the Chicago area ,God touched his life and called him into the Christian ministry, while serving at Ebenezer A.M.E .Church ,in Evanston, Illinois, under the pastorate of the late Senior Bishop McKinley Young. He has been blessed to have pastored ten(10)
Churches before retiring, last year. Two of the ten churches were in the Chicago, Illinois area and eight in Texas. He always left each church better than it was when he found it.
Rev. McGruder retired as a very successful pastor and surrendered servant in the Lord’s vineyard, in 2023. He remains as a proclaimer of God’s Holy Word based on the Gospel as recorded by St. Matthew in chapter 4 and verse 4 where Jesus the Christ of God spoke and said: “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
Therefore, since his retirement, he has started a 66 sermon series covering the entire Bible.
Accordingly, on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10:30 a.m. pastor Emeritus in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Rev. Harvey McGruder will preach at his home church, Davis Chapel United Methodist Church, were he received his spiritual foundation for life, in a Pre-2024 Homecoming Praise and Worship Service, where the Rev. Tammy Stewart is the pastor.
