Rotary: Our Library is a Magical Place

A library is a lot of things. In Marlin, that is where one finds Library Director Sarah Payne and Interim Librarian Stephanie West-Curtis. They are professionals who can offer guidance to students, job-seekers and others conducting research on almost any topic imaginable. Here, too, find volunteers who perform clerical, computer, and other tasks vital to the important mission of supporting lifelong learning, intellectual curiosity, and free and equal access to information.

A library is a place filled with all kinds of books, fiction, reference books, children’s books, bulletin boards, atlases, comics, e-books, and audiobooks.  It is a place filled with yet other ordinary things, computers, a scanner, globes, internet service, lighting, and tables and chairs.

The library is a community hub. It facilitates connecting people to information and connecting people to people.

So how does it become a magical place? With every single act of books coming down and going up on their shelves, the library’s shuffling sound is smooth and becalming.  There one can read and be transported to places untraveled. For others, reading a book means exposure to new facts and ideas and increased insight into the human condition. A transformation begins as learning grows.

Perhaps the library provides that one service that is incredibly important to someone. Its use fills a need and provides a sense of accomplishment.

Enter the Marlin Library with a brain, a heart, and a desire to be uplifted. Unlike the experience of shopping, there is no need for a credit card and an incipient need for “stuff.” Here, one becomes a little more extraordinary, instead.

Library volunteers are vital. They perform many important jobs that cannot be funded out of the Library’s regular operating budget and so are essential to maintaining quality library service. Volunteers support the Library Staff in various capacities and, supervised by Library Staff, work with patrons and help with special projects and community events.

If you enjoy meeting and helping people, then share your talents and skills and discover the rewards of giving your time and energy to an organization that enriches the lives of others and the community…at the Marlin Library!

Marlin’s library provides resources and services for literacy and education to anyone in need or wanting access. It is a place where job seekers can learn new skills and search for employment, or where local entrepreneurs can host seminars.
