Drought management considerations webinar set July 21

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in District 6, serving the counties of West Texas, will address drought management when it presents its next free “On the Line with AgriLife” webinar at 8:30 a.m. on July 21.

The topic of the webinar is “Drought Management Considerations for Landowners.” Megan Clayton, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension rangeland specialist, Corpus Christi, will be the featured speaker.

“We’re excited to present Dr. Clayton as our next speaker in our ongoing series about issues important to Texans right now,” said Payton Keifer, AgriLife Extension agent for Pecos County. “As we start into summer, now is an especially important time for tips on managing rangeland in preparation for drought.”

The webinar will run around 30 minutes and will feature a brief presentation by Clayton, followed by a question and answer period.

“Dry times are pretty much a given in Texas, so it is something always on ranchers’ minds,” said Clayton. “Understanding grass growth and livestock grazing pressure can help maintain healthy rangelands, no matter the weather.”

Webinars are held the third Tuesday of each month and feature various AgriLife Extension agents and specialists discussing topics important to West Texas stakeholders.

“‘On the Line with AgriLife’ was developed to be an easy way for our landowners and producers to receive up-to-date information,” said Emily Grant, AgriLife Extension agent for Val Verde County. “As they are out and about in the morning, be it in the truck or on their tractor, we encourage them to quickly call in to listen to the update as well as ask questions of our specialists.”

Participants who complete a survey after the webinar will be entered to win the book, “Brush and Weeds of Texas Rangeland.”

AgriLife Extension agents Keifer; Grant; Cody Trimble, Glasscock County; Tanner Hash, Martin County; Dakota Kempken, Glasscock County; Sami Lindsey, Crane County; Jessica McCrory, Terrell County; and Matlin Sain, Presidio County, organized the series. These agents also produce a joint newsletter for their stakeholders and are organizing a West Texas Farmers and Ranchers Convention for July.
