Henderson holds position, Milton named Mayor Pro-tem
The November election proved to be interesting in a number of ways, but right here within the city of Marlin, there was another race going on. Precinct four Councilman Scottie Henderson, who has held his position for many years, was challenged by newcomer Timothy Lopez and came out on top.
During early voting, Henderson received 52 votes, while Lopez received 21 votes. On Election Day, Henderson locked in an additional 15 votes, but Lopez only added four supporters to his repertoire. This came to a total count of 67 votes towards Scottie Henderson and 25 for Timothy Lopez. Henderson was sworn into his position during the Nov. 10 city council meeting.
Henderson also held the position of Mayor Pro-tem for the past year. Pro-tem is short for “pro tempore,” meaning “for the time being.” It is a one year position that designates the position holder as the presiding officer in the event that the Mayor at Large cannot fulfill their duties at any given time for any given reason.
Even with Henderson returning to the council for another term, his position as pro-tem has concluded with the election. The appointment of another council member for the position took place at the Nov. 10 meeting as well.
Henderson’s recommendation to the council was Terrence McDavid, but Councilman Max Martinez motioned to appoint councilwoman Rhonda Milton. With two motions at hand, Porter deferred to Henderson, noting his tenure in his position and seconded the motion to nominate McDavid instead.
When called to a vote, only councilmen Porter and Henderson voted yes, while the nominees abstained. It was brought forth again whether anyone would like to second Martinez’s motion, to which Councilwoman Nettie Moore obliged.
“She’s a big part of this community,” she said. “Her skillset is very much appreciated on the council.”
After an intense discussion of the best way to move forward, another vote was called. Council members Martinez, Moore, as well and Mayor Carolyn Lofton, voted in favor of appointing Milton. Both nominees abstained for the second vote, while Porter and Henderson voted against the appointment.
With a vote of 3-2-2, Councilwoman Rhonda Milton was named Mayor Pro-tem for the city of Marlin. She will hold the position until the end of her 2-year term.
