Volunteers conduct an exemplary drive-thru distribution

“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.”  ~Author Unknown

Volunteers from First Christian Church Marlin, Rotary Club, city workers, Golden Years Nursing Care and Rehabilitation, New Life Tabernacle, and numerous friends and relatives joined the Central Texas Mobile Pantry in distribution of food on Sept. 26 in Marlin. Basking in enthusiasm (and the sun) to serve, volunteers gathered to provide safety for pedestrians, motorists, and volunteers as they followed clearly defined routes, and then, the efficient distribution of all foods. The volunteerism exhibited at the food distribution on Sept. 26 was engaging and harmonious while dynamic! Everyone once there is prepared to serve again.

Volunteer Leader Jan Smith remarked, “Join in this valuable volunteer opportunity. It’s unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.”

Food insecurity is an urgent crisis with people lacking a consistent source of the food necessary for an active and healthy lifestyle. The Central Texas Mobile Pantry serves the most food insecure population; it provides free food to feed families and individuals in need.

The Mobile Pantry visits the parking lot of First Baptist Church Marlin on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 9-11 a.m. It provides each family with approximately 28 pounds of food consisting of shelf-stable items such as peanut butter, brown rice, breakfast cereal, canned tuna or chicken, and canned fruit. Mobile pantry foods also include frozen meat, various vegetables, and fresh fruit.

The next food distribution by Central Texas Mobile Pantry will be Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 9-11 a.m.

Won’t you consider volunteering? There are several jobs to do during food distribution. This writer had her first try at directing traffic at the end of the food distribution line. The Mayor of Marlin bagged groceries! It was fun! And there is a spot for you!

Volunteers are needed at FBC Marlin by 8:30 a.m. on the 24th of October!
