Lady Bulldogs tied for first place
The Marlin Lady Bulldogs basketball team returned home to host the Dawson Lady Bulldogs on Friday, Feb. 2, for senior night.
Marlin dominated Dawson with their play, demolishing them 55-18. Marlin started strong with help from a three pointer by Kya Mitchell (1) to take an early 5-2 lead. That was soon followed with a successful three point play by Aaryha Johnson (3) to expand their lead to 9-2, and continued their scoring surge to go up 14-2. The first quarter ended with Marlin comfortably ahead 17-2 after a buzzer beating three pointer by Mitchell.
The first points of the second quarter came from a three pointer by Shawna Robinson (4) for a 20-3 lead. Robinson continued her hot streak with a three pointer and a fastbreak layup to pull away 28-11. Marlin went into halftime winning 30-13. The first points of the third quarter came from free throws by Mitchell to take a 32-13 lead. Marlin was relentless the whole third quarter, allowing only one point defensively on a free throw to enter the fourth quarter ahead 42-14.
Marlin picked up where they left off in the fourth quarter with a 7-0 start for a commanding 49-14 lead. Marlin continued to dominate, allowing just four points the rest of the game to win in convincing fashion 55-18. Keundra Wilson had a balanced game with three rebounds, an assist, and three steals. Aaryha Johnson played terrifically, scoring 10 points, seven rebounds, an assist, and three steals.
Kya Mitchell was on fire, scoring 23 points along with recording three rebounds, two assists, and six steals. Shawna Robinson was unstoppable, recording 18 points, seven rebounds, an assist, and three steals.
With this victory, Marlin has an impressive overall record of 23-3 and a district record of 12-1 and is tied for first place in the district standings.
After a road game between the Axtell Lady Horns on Tuesday, Marlin’s regular season will come to an end and they will get ready for the start of the playoffs.
