Bulldogs overtake Bremond, crush Wortham in first district games

The Marlin Bulldogs Varsity basketball team defeated the visiting Bremond Tigers 57-47 in last Tuesday's league test.

The Bulldogs took the tip off and immediately landed two points on the board. From there, they just kept coming in. The boys pulled off ten points in as many minutes, while Bremond only could sink three points in that time. The second quarter went similarly, even though Bremond took the ball. The teams headed into halftime with Tigers 12 points down and their spirits a little crushed.

Though they attempted to make a comeback in the next section, they only had an additional ten points on the board by the end of it. Free throws from junior Tremayne Richardson, field goals from sophomore Derion Gullette, and a block from sophomore K'jahmarrey Wilson contributed to Marlin’s 15 additional points and full 17 point gain on the Tigers.

The final quarter was just as eventful as the last, with both teams battling their hearts out and killing it on both defense and offense. Bremond made the first few points of the match, but the Bulldogs quickly gained a further advantage. Shots from Keyshawn Thomas and Ty Harris were few of many as the Bulldog’s score grew and grew. With less than three minutes on the clock, they looked to be ready to cement the win with a 15 points lead, but the Tigers dug deep. In those last minutes they sank not one, not two, but three different shots, taking their score from 42 to 47 and finalizing their loss at only ten points down.

Thomas and Gullette were leaders on the scoreboards, along with teammates Tremayne Richardson and Ty Harris.

Thomas managed 12 points, as did Gullette, while Richardson scored a total of 11 points and Harris scored 10. Along with being top scorers, these athletes show their ball skills across the board.

Thomas scored five field goals, two free throws, nabbed four rebounds, handled an assist, a steal, a deflection, with only two personal fouls and one turnover. Gullette made three field goals, two three-pointers, nabbed four rebounds, with four successful blocks and only one turnover.

Richardson scored five free throws, three two-pointers, managed five rebounds, (four of which were defensive,) and rocked out an assist and a steal without any turnover the entire game. Harris made three triple-pointers, the most of any player during the game, as well as completed four assists with a 1:1 steal/turnover ratio.

He and Gullette were also top scorers in Friday’s game against Wortham, along with teammate senior Tydae Mayes. Harris came out of the match with 13 points under his belt, a three-pointer made, 100 percent of his free throws, a single rebound, two assists and a steal. Gullette also made all of his free throws, successfully grabbing four rebounds, completing two assists, and a steal with only two personal fouls and turnovers. Mayes scored 11 points, sinking five of eight free throws, got four rebounds, two assists, five steals, with only one turnover.

The Bulldogs, 6-5 after the Bremond match, moved to seven district wins with the game versus Wortham. The home team came out with only 29 points to Marlin’s 65. The Bulldogs take on the Mart Panthers on Tuesday evening, before which they sat tied for first place. Scores will be available next week.

The Bulldogs travel to take on the Axtell Longhorns on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Check the Marlin Athletics Twitter page or marlinisd.org for information on how to get tickets.
