Bulldogs fall in heartbreaker to Honey Grove
The Marlin Bulldogs football team traveled out to Royse City High School Friday, Sept. 6, for a neutral site game against the Honey Grove Warriors. Honey Grove defeated Marlin in a 21-20 heartbreaker.
The Bulldogs started the game slowly, as they were shut out 15-0 in the first quarter. Marlin broke the drought in the second quarter with a booming 92-yard touchdown pass from Roderick Suiters to Jordan Womack to make the score 15-6.
Honey Grove responded with a 13-yard touchdown run to grow their lead and make the score 21-6 after the missed extra point attempt. The Bulldogs shut out Honey Grove in the second half 14-0, including a 56-yard touchdown pass from Suiters to Jordan Womack and a 47-yard touchdown pass from Suiters to Arik Smith-Shelley. Unfortunately, it was not enough and Honey Grove held on to beat Marlin 21-20.
Roderick Suiters saw the field extremely well, throwing for 271 yards and a touchdown along with rushing for 30 yards. Arik Smith-Shelley was fantastic, catching four passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Jordan Womack was unstoppable, catching four passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. With this loss, the Bulldogs have a record of 0-2.
Next up for Marlin will be a road game against the Chilton Pirates. The game will be on Friday, Sept. 10 and kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
