Bulldogs handily defeat Riesel 48-23
The Marlin Bulldogs football team hosted the Riesel Indians on Oct. 14. They handily defeated Riesel 48-23.
The first quarter was all Marlin as the Bulldogs struck first with a 6-yard touchdown run from Desmond Woodson for a 7-0 lead. That would later be followed with a 21-yard touchdown run from Woodson for a 13-0 lead after a missed extra point. Marlin added on with a 19-yard touchdown pitch and run from Woodson to Zha’Mauryon Lofton for a 20-0 lead. Riesel scored first in the second quarter with a 26-yard field goal to make the score 20-3.
The Indians then cut the deficit in half with a 9-yard touchdown run to make the score 20-10. The Bulldogs responded with a 19-yard touchdown run to make it a 26-10 lead at halftime after a failed two point attempt.
The Bulldogs extended their lead in the third quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run by Mario Hopwood to make it a 32-10 lead after a failed two point attempt. Riesel would answer with a 49-yard touchdown run to make the score 32-16 after a missed extra point.
Marlin responded with a 6-yard touchdown run from Hopwood for a 40-16 lead after a two point conversion. The Bulldogs also added to their lead with a safety for a 42-16 lead. The Indians opened up the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 34-yard touchdown pass to make the score 42-23. The Bulldogs scored the final points of the game with a 14-yard touchdown run by Ja’marien Womack for a final score of 48-23.
Desmond Woodson played phenomenal, throwing for 222 yards, along with rushing for 87 yards and three touchdowns. Mario Hopwood was incredible, rushing for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Zha’Mauryon Lofton also had a great game, catching nine passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.
The next matchup for the Marlin will beon the road as they take on the Bruceville-Eddy Eagles. The game will be on Friday and is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
