Bulldogs headed for postseason play
The Marlin Bulldogs basketball team hosted the Bremond Tigers on Feb. 8. Marlin fell to the Tigers in a 43-40 nailbiter.
After a couple scoreless minutes, Marlin scored first with a floater by Roderick Suiters (1) for a 2-0 lead. Bremond went on a 7-0 scoring run to go ahead of the Bulldogs 7-2. Marlin would fight back with a layup by Elijah Davis (15) to close the gap to 7-6. The first quarter ended with Marlin trailing 12-6.
The second quarter started with a basket by Aarik Sharik-Shelley (12) for a score of 12-8. The Bulldogs continued to fight with a layup by Jordan Womack (4) to make it a 14-10 deficit, followed by a basket from Sharik-Shelley to make the score 14-12. The Bulldogs closed the gap to one on a three pointer by Jordan Womack for a 16-15 deficit, which was the score going into halftime.
Marlin took the lead to start the third quarter with a floater by Sharik-Shelley for a score of 17-16. They stayed ahead with a successful three point play by Sharik-Shelley for a 22-20 lead, which was followed by a fastbreak dunk by Jordan Womack to make the score 24-20. Bremond would claw back and regained the lead 26-24 and increased the lead to 31-24. The third quarter ended at 31-26 off a buzzer beating layup by Mario Hopwood (5).
The fourth quarter began with a layup by Davis, making the score 31-28. The Tigers tried to pull away and went up on Marlin 37-28. The Bulldogs tried to rally with a big three pointer by Jaidan Womack (11) to make it a 37-31 deficit, and they came up with a little spurt to make the score 41-37. Sharik-Shelley tried to keep their hopes alive with a three pont shot to make the score 43-40, but it would not be enough and they would fall 43-40.
On Friday, the Bulldogs looked to rebound from that crushing defeat as they hosted the Mart Panthers. Marlin dominated the Panthers, winning 80-37, giving them a district record of 10-3.
The Bulldogs will take on the winner of a seeding game between Bremond and Dawson on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 10 a.m. at Robinson High School for the final playoff seeding for the district.
