Lady Bulldogs are Bi-District Champs
The Marlin Lady Bulldogs girls’ basketball team traveled to Centerville on Monday, Feb. 10, to take on the Mildred Lady Eagles in the Bi-District round of the playoffs. The Lady Bulldogs were victorious and defeated Mildred, winning 40-32 to keep their season alive.
Marlin started the scoring with a three point make by Aaria Johnson (2) for a quick 3-0 start. Mildred responded with seven unanswered points to go ahead 7-3. The Lady Bulldogs broke the drought with a fastbreak layup by Aaryha Johnson (3) to tighten the score to 7-5. That was soon followed by a three point make by De’Zyre Davis (4) to retake the lead 8-7. The first quarter ended with Marlin ahead 11-7.
Marlin scored first in the second quarter with back-to-back layups by Aaryha Johnson to take a 15-7 lead. Mildred soared back with a 5-0 run to make the score 15-13. Marlin ended their scoring slump with a fastbreak layup by Aaria Johnson in the last minute to keep their lead at 17-13, which would be the score at halftime.
Marlin scored first in the third quarter with a free throw by Aaria Johnson for an 18-13 lead. The Lady Bulldogs stayed tough with a big layup by Aaryha Johnson for a 20-13 advantage. Mildred tried to rally back, but Marlin halted their momentum with a big three point make by Davis to make it a 25-19 lead. The Lady Bulldogs remained aggressive with an offensive rebound and layup by Keundra Wilson (22) for a double digit 29-19 lead, which was the score at the end of the third quarter.
Marlin scored first in the fourth quarter with a layup by Aaria Johnson for a 31-19 advantage. Mildred tried to rally back, but Marlin responded with a clutch basket by Wilson to maintain their lead 33-25.
The Lady Bulldogs used late free throws to extend the lead to 37-27 and held strong to win the game 40-32.
Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will play LaPoynor on Friday night, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana.
