Lady Bulldogs fall to Bremond in battle for first place in district
The Marlin Lady Bulldogs basketball team hosted the Bremond Lady Tigers on Friday, Jan. 5, in a battle for first place in the district standings. Marlin was defeated 59-45.
The entire first quarter was basically even, as no team managed to get any separation. The first quarter ended with Marlin leading 13-12. Marlin started the second quarter slowly, as Bremond pulled away to lead 23-13. The Lady Bulldogs broke the drought with a free throw by Aaryha Johnson (3) to make the score 23-14. Marlin tried to stay alive with a layup by Taylor Wright (5) to make it a 25-16 deficit. The Lady Bulldogs went into halftime trailing Bremond 28-18.
The first points in the third quarter for Marlin came from a layup by Aaryha Johnson to make the score 31-20, but Bremond responded with a 7-0 spurt to widen their lead to 37-20. The Lady Bulldogs broke the drought with a three pointer by Kya Mitchell (1) to make it a 37-23 deficit. That was soon followed with a layup by Shawna Robinson (4) to make the score 41-25. The third quarter ended with Marlin behind 45-29.
The first points in the fourth quarter for Marlin came from a layup by Aaria Johnson (2) for a 45-31 deficit. The Lady Bulldogs fought back to make the score 45-35, and they brought their deficit down to under 10 with a three pointer by Mitchell to close the gap to 49-41. Bremond responded with a 7-1 run to lead 56-42 and would defeat Marlin 59-45.
With this loss, Marlin has an overall record of 15-3 and a district record of 4-1. After a road game with the Dawson Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday, Marlin will host the Axtell Lady Horns. The game will be on Friday, Jan. 12, and tip off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
